What kind of gear does a photographer take to a motorsport event?  Well, that's a silly question because it differs across the board.  For me though?  I'm a Canon shooter.

This time I'm at Circuit of the Americas covering the IMSA/FIA WEC Lone Star Le Mans weekend.  Track action kicks off today with some practice & qualifying rounds for all groups.  I will be taking advantage of this time to get the basic shots of each car as they make their way around the track.

Later this evening as FIA WEC machines set out for practice #2, I will be throwing on my fire suit & helmet to spend a good amount of time in pit lane.  Practice sessions are a great time for this as teams run through the paces of their stops & look for any issues that may arise come race day.  Not to mention, with practice being at 8pm, it won't be so damn hot.  We are in Texas after all.

What gear did I bring?  I'll give you a quick run down...

  • Canon 7D Mark II DSLR - x2
  • Canon EF 300mm f2.8 IS L telephoto lens
  • Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L telephoto lens
  • Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS lens
  • Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 lens
  • Canon EF 2xIII extender
  • Opteka 6.5mm f3.5 fisheye
  • Canon 580exII speedlite

Other gear not pictured would include laptop, memory cards, batteries & chargers, business cards, monopod, camelbak, & the ThinkTank Airport Secuirty rolling bag to carry most of it in.
